Alicante: Local Festivities

The most emblematic fiesta of Alicante, called Las Hogueras de San Juan, has officially been declared an event of International Touristic Interest.  The festival, which honors Saint John and initiates summer on the 24th of June, is an explosion of color, tradition, fireworks, parades, processions and the building of monumental bonfires.  During the festival, which lasts until June 29th, the local people abandon their daily routines and feel the street to intensely experience the festivities.

Another outstanding Alicante festival is the Romería de la Santa Faz, celebrated two weeks after Holy Thursday.  300,000 pilgrims fill the eight kilometer route between the San Nicolás cathedral and the monastery of Santa Faz.  The monastery is home to the sacred relic to which the pilgrims’ prayers, wishes, petitions, fervor and devotion is directed.

Throughout the province of Alicante, numerous festivals of Moros y Cristianos represent an attractive and interesting mixture of religious belief, strict protocol, tradition and street celebration.  The majority of these celebrations take place during the summer months.

We can not fail to mention Los Carnavales, days full of color and festive atmosphere, during which the only rule is to dress up in costume and have a good time with friends.  In springtime, Alicante celebrates the beauty and tradition of Semana Santa, a week during which Alicante’s streets are filled with religious processions.
